Why Do You Need SVLK & FSC Certification?
FSC or Forest Stewardship Council is a non-profit organization located in Bonn, Germany, and established in 1993. The purpose of FSC is to promote forest conservation.
The FSC logo in the wood product shows that this product is environment-friendly and comes from the forest that is well cared for and the following legislation.
Meanwhile, the SVLK or Timber Legality Verification System is a system to demonstrate that timber is gained through the legal process. Confirmed by the Ministry of Forestry, the SVLK certificate shows that the lumbers come from Indonesia and are legal to be exported anywhere.
Through these mandatory certifications, the lumber production becomes legal, and you do not have to face any lawsuits regarding your wood production.
The Requirement to Get the SVLK & FSC Certification
To get the SVLK from the Ministry of Forestry, you can first prepare the business permits (SIUP), and registration certificates (TDP). If you already have those two permits, it is easier for you to continue taking care of SVLK certification.
You must apply to the Mining of Forestry. After that, wait for the assessment process. Your company will be assessed by twenty-five institutions like PT Sucofindo. All these institutions have been monitored by the Ministry of Forestry and Environment.
The SVLK has several validity periods, ranging from a validity period of 12 months to a validity period of six years. It all depends on your position and the value of the investment in your lumber business.
The process for obtaining FSC is a bit different from the SVLK. The FSC does not issue certification. It is simply an institution for establishing standards and assessing forest management.
You can get an FSC certificate by following a few steps:
- Contact an agency that can provide FSC certification. You must provide information about the wood production process and the requirements for a certificate.
- The auditor will assess whether your business is eligible for certification.
- After all the processes are complete, you will get an FSC certificate
The FSC certificate will be valid for five years, and you will be re-audited after five years if you want to renew the certificate.
